Closed Circuit TV has evolved to a very sophisticated surveillance and security technology including open and intelligent video systems, IPv6 and other data transport protocol network video, digital imaging, camera intelligence, video servers, advanced compression standards and decoder protocols, etc. CCTV incorporates the real-time processing of live video images in many different video recording formats of High Resolution, digital, High Definition, low-light and totally dark conditions, sometimes aided by IR illumination, video streams, which can be used for a variety of modern and effective security applications. Examples are recording of criminal evidence and vandalism, deterrence in preventive security, number-plate recognition, border and perimeter control, building security, etc.

Camera systems, using CCD or CMOS sensors, can be operated and managed by remote control. Neighbouring cameras can watch over adjacent systems. More advanced camera mountings can be in protective and bullet-proof casing and may include panning, tilting, and zooming capabilities and made unobtrusive inside reflective domes .

Britain ranks number one in the implementation density of publicly installed CCTV surveillance systems.
